Dorothy Jane Winfree Beattie was born in Beaumont, TX on October 27, 1928, to parents, Shelby and Villula Winfree and passed away at her home Saturday, March 16, 2013.
A lifelong resident of Beaumont, Jane graduated from Beaumont High School in 1945. Jane completed her undergraduate degree at Texas Woman's University and went on to receive her Master's of Education from the University of Arizona. She began her 30 year teaching career primarily teaching Physical Education and coaching women's sports at Beaumont High School, and later at French High School. At French, Jane moved from the classroom into a Counselor's role that she held until retirement.
Jane was an active supporter of the athletic programs and sponsored the French High Cheerleaders for many of her teaching and counseling years. Most, if not all, graduates there knew Jane and many had their lives and careers shaped and guided by her commitment to the students and graduates.
After retirement, Jane remained active in Beaumont with her church and many social organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob Beattie; and brother, Shelby Winfree, III. She is survived by her son, Bobby and his wife, Lisa of Montgomery, TX, and her granddaughter, Amanda Beattie Slover and her husband, Daniel of Houston.
Surviving extended family include her sister-in-law, Kathy Winfree and her daughter, Nancy Winfree Miles, husband, Mike and their two children, Laura and James of Johnson City, TN; her aunt, Maudie Valenta of Wharton, TX; and her cousin, Al Johnson of Houston.
Through Jane's passionate hobby for genealogy, many more additional relatives and extended Winfree and Baylor family trees she worked so hard to identify and catalog, survive her today. In addition, she is also survived by her special friends, Ken and Pat Abbot of Beaumont who meant so much to her in her later years and will now look after her beloved Yorkie, Buddy.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Friday, March 22nd at 2:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church of Beaumont, followed by a gathering of family and friends. In lieu of flowers, it was Jane's wish that considerations be given to First United Methodist Church of Beaumont, The Wimberley Adoption Group & Rescue (wimberleywagrescue.org), or your charity of choice.
