Diane's husband, Hugh Powers Beattie, was the first General Superintendent at Pictured Rocks NL (Oct 1967 to 1972), simultaneously serving as Superintendent of Isle Royale NP (Mar 1969 to 1972).

From 1986 (after her husband retired from the National Park Service) for the next 16 years, Diane and Hugh Beattie traveled with a 30-foot travel trailer towed behind their truck and explored the wonders of North America. Diane and Hugh finally settled down to do shorter trips from their home base at North Ranch Escapees RV Park, 30625 Arizona 89, Congress, AZ 85332, near Wickenburg & Congress, AZ, where they both passed away, and where both their daughters now own property -- (Gloria's winter home about five miles away).

Survivors include their daughters, Gloria (Charles "Chuck" Sundby) of AZ (Winters) & ID (Summers), and Kathleen "Kathy" Beattie of Paavola, Houghton County, near Hancock, MI. No grandchildren.

from Chief of the Public Affairs Division in the Northeast Regional Office in Philadelphia since 1968. (Oct 21, 1976 - Escanaba Woman’s Club Members were taken back into the history of the Frontier days of America with a slick presentation by Superintendent Burns. The Burns Family and volunteers who live in the Sand Point area have recreated the life of the pioneer family by demonstrating all the crafts of yesterday, such as baking in a mud-clay type oven used by the Indians; weaving linen and spinning wool for the use of the home and clothing. One of the most interesting spinning wheels Burns has made has an oak piece of carved wood that came from an oak tree that grew on the farm of Abe Lincoln in Spencer County, IN.
