Gladys passed away May 14, 2011, one month before her 94th birthday. She was born June 14, 1917, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in Laurium. She was one of 12 children in the Aittama family. Gladys went through nurse's training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and was a member of the first graduating class of Nurse Anesthetists in 1940. She married Robert E. Beattie in 1944. They traveled during his U.S. Navy career, living in Georgia, Cuba and California before moving to Grants Pass, Ore. She worked as an RN in charge of the recovery room at Josephine General Hospital in Grants Pass for 17 years. Gladys and Robert moved to Portland in 2001 to be closer to their family. Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Robert, in March 2011. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Kelly Stone (Ron) of Portland; son, Robert Charles Beattie of Beaverton; grandsons, Brian Robert Kelly of Eugene and Patrick Joseph Kelly of Portland; and numerous relatives in Michigan and Florida. Gladys was a ray of sunshine to all she met-nobody was a stranger. She took great pride in having a Flag Day birthday, and always wore a flag pin. She will be missed by many! A private ceremony for the family will be held. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
