Ruhama Mebane Beaty was born on July 3, 1812 in Guilford County, NC. She was the daughter of David Mebane and Anne Cummins Mebane.

Ruhama was listed in the will of her father probated in February, 1821 in Guilford County, NC. She was listed as one of the three youngest children (along with her brothers, Cummins (Dr. David Cummins Mebane) and Nelson (Rev. William Nelson Mebane)) They received the proceeds of the sale of items to be put on interest. Ruhama also received $300 and her bed with other furniture.

Ruhama married Dr. Thomas Franklin Beaty on December 28, 1837 in Guilford County, NC. Ruhama's brother, Dr. David Cummins Mebane, was an important doctor in Guilford County, NC.

Their mother was a founding member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC in 1824. Cummins was an Elder in the church and very prominent citizen who is mentioned numerous times in the church's history.
