Chester George Beaufort, 83, of Ligonier (Waterford), died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, in Latrobe Area Hospital.
He was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Bolivar, a son of the late Charles F. and Tillie Stormer Beaufort.

A member of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Laurel Hill State Park, he subsequently entered the U.S. Army for eight years, during which he had the honor of serving as a driver for Gen. Dwight Eisenhower.

After working as an AT&T lineman and self-employed general contractor, he was employed as a carpenter for Westinghouse Electric in Blairsville for 23 years until his retirement in 1979.

He was a life member of the Ligonier VFW 734, a 55-year member of the Ligonier Township VFD 1 (Waterford), a 50-year Westmoreland County Forest Fire Warden.

He also served as Emergency Management Director for Ligonier Township for 49 years.

He was a member of the committee that founded the Ligonier Valley Ambulance Service and also a founding member and chairman of the Ligonier Township Planning Commission.

He was an active Boy Scout leader, a committee person for the Democratic Party and also served with the Area Office on Aging.

He was an avid hunter and member of the Ligonier Township Sportsmen's Association.

He most recently acted as consultant for his sons' and grandson's business, Beaufort Services Inc.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven sisters and three brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Jane Roberts Beaufort; a daughter, Mrs. Mark (Susan) Ankney of Rector; three sons, John (Vicki), Thomas (fiancee, Jeanine Villanueva), and Rob (Rhonda) Beaufort, all of Ligonier (Waterford);

Also, five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Arthur J. Beaufort of Ligonier. Also, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the McCracken Funeral Chapel Ligonier, Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Services will be held in the funeral chapel Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David A. Bell Sr. officiating.

Interment with full military honors will follow in the Fort Palmer Cemetery.

The Ligonier Township VFD 1 will hold services in the funeral home Friday at 7:30 p.m.
