John Bebb was 24, and living in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private on 2 Jan 1862. He mustered in Co. D 4th Iowa Cavalry, on 24 Jan 1862. Bebb became a "Reenlisted Veteran" on 2 Jan 1864. He was later mustered out of the service with the rest of his company on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.
John Bebb had three other brothers in Co. D of the 4th Iowa Cavalry: Evan, Sylvester, and Edward who was a recipient of the Medal of Honor. Another brother, Nathaniel, served with the 25th Iowa Infantry, and died on board the hospital boat "City of Memphis" on Feb 18, 1863.
