Gertrude A. Akers, 86, of Norwich, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at the Cortland Care Center in Cortland. She was the wife of the late John J. Akers and the mother of June Ramsey and John C. Akers. Born December 13, 1918 in Dover, Delaware, Gertrude was the daughter of the late Charles and Gertrude (Monnell) Becker. Gertrude resided in New York City and Ossining before moving in 1976 to Norwich to make their home at Chenango Lake. Gertrude was employed as a secretary at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in New York City, and later worked as a real estate salesperson and broker in Ossining and Norwich. Gertrude and John loved their home at Chenango Lake, especially their pond, and enjoyed entertaining friends and family at the lake. Her other hobbies included cooking, reading, sailing, and gardening. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship of the United Church of Christ of Norwich. Gertrude was predeceased by her husband, John, on August 4, 1989, whom she was married to for 49 years. She is survived by her daughter, June Ramsey, and husband, David, Oxford; her son, John C. Akers, and his wife, Theresa, and her children; her grandchildren, Jennifer Lancaster, and husband, Mark, Cortland, and John C. Bowman, and wife, Jennifer, Brentwood, Tenn.; and one great-grandchild, Devin Lancaster, Cortland.

Funeral services for Gertrude will be held on Friday evening, July 22, at 8:00 p.m. from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich. The Rev. Joseph Connolly, Pastor of the United Church of Christ of Norwich, will officiate. Committal services for Gertrude will be held on Saturday morning, July 23, at 9:00 a.m. from the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich. Friends may call at the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m.
