Julia Beckett Wiley, 94, of 314 S. State Street in Athens, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at Princeton Community Hospital.

Born June 27, 1912, in Fitzpatrick, she was the daughter of the late George and Gertrude Basham Beckett. She retired in 1975 after 23 years of dedicated service as a teacher for Mercer County Schools. Mrs. Wiley last taught at Whitethorn Elementary School in Bluefield. She was a 1930 graduate of Athens High School and a 1934 graduate of Concord College. She was a member of Athens Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher for the young adults class. She was a member of Athens Chapter No. 33 Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Concord College Alumni Association and the Retired Teachers Association.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie D. "Ben" Wiley; one grandson, David Pike; nine brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Rose Pike of Athens, and Letha Ann Taylor and her husband Owen of Richlands, Va.; five grandchildren, Tim Pike, Mike Pike, Russell Taylor, Tammy Bartfai and Sarah Bushati; one great-grandchild, Tori Bartfai; and one brother Earl Beckett and his wife Eula of Rich Creek, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 2, 2007, at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Tom Vance officiating. Burial will follow in the Athens Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. today.
