Clarence was the 4th cousin of the Rev.Henry Ward Beecher. He is the 6 great-grandson of John Beecher, one of the founders of the New Haven CT colony in 1637. He served in the Civil War and was promoted to LIEUTENANT 1st Class on 14-August-1864 (Company D 61st NY INFANTRY). He was then promoted to Full Captain on 15-December-1864 in the same unit. Following his Civil War service, he became a New York City police officer.
