The death in action, on August 1st, of Corpl. E, R, Beet, 6th Leicesters, has been notified to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Beet, 59, New Street, by his officer and also officially from the Record Office, Lichfield. Corporal Beet, was 23 years of age.. and was formerly employed by the G.N.R. Company, in the refreshment rooms at Grantham, and afterwards as manager at Retford. As a boy the deceased sang at St. Saviour's Church choir. He joined the Army in April 1913, proceeding overseas in February, 1918. Corpl. Beet's brother, who has been wounded three times, is still serving. In a letter to the deceased parents, Lieut. Norman A, Hudson said that a small piece of metal from a stray shell hit him on the side of the head and killed him instantaneously. The writer added "He was in my Platoon under my command and I can truthfully tell you that his death to me is quite a personal loss, He was so bright and cheerful always, and so capable, energetic and dependable-in fact he was one of the most promising non-commissioned officers in the company. His loss is felt by everyone-officers and men-in the company. It was a particularly unfortunate affair and, I want to be allowed to offer you my most sincere sympathy in this great bereavement, for I'm sure he must have been a splendid son to his mother. When he was killed he was doing his duty, as he had always done to the last letter. Again please accept the condolences of myself as his Platoon Commander, and of the other officers and comrades in his company."
