He was baptized Johann Carl on March 11, 1886 in Kriefkohl (Freiwalde), West Prussia, Germany. Immigrated at the age of 4 with his family on the S.S. EIDER, arriving in New York harbor November 25, 1890. By the age of 14 he was working in a foundry in Syracuse. He spent most of his working life in the "car barn" off Wolf Street, repairing city trolleys. He married Anna Maria Kreft and they had 11 children.

Rites Friday

The funeral services for Charles J. Behnke, a retired machinist, who died yesterday afternoon at his home, 136 S. Edwards av., will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday in the Welter Funeral Home.

Officiating will be the Rev. Ralph L. Rebman. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Behnke had been a machinist for the old Syracuse Railway Company for 30 years and was recently employed by Crouse-Hinds Company.

He was a member of the Amalgamated Association of Street Electrical Railway and Motor Coach Employes, Syracuse Division No. 580, and the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Anna M. Behnke; five sons, Charles J. Behnke, Jr., North Syracuse; Edward F., Ernest W., John F. and Robert C. Behnke, all of Syracuse; five daughters, Mrs. William Gratien, of Syracuse; Mrs. Sidney Reed, of Jamesville; Mrs. R. C. Fisk, of Liverpool; Mrs. Leonard Smith, of North Syracuse, and Mrs. Don Santy of Syracuse; a brother, Henry Behnke, of Buffalo; three sisters, Mrs. Stephen Schnurr, Mrs. George Zube and Mrs. Thomas Smith, all of Syracuse; 22 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. today and tomorrow at the funeral home.
