Johann Carl Behnke (also known as Carl and Charles J. Behnke) was born December 22, 1864, the son of Johann and Regine (GrΓ€ber) Behnke, and the twin of Anne Christine Behnke. Both babies were baptized December 26, 1864 near their home in Freiwalde (near Kriefkohl), West Prussia (today in the region of Gdansk, Poland--formerly the Free City of Danzig).

On November 25, 1890 Carl and his wife, Wilhelmina (Kreft), his mother, Regina, and their three little sons, Friedrich, Carl, and Paul, arrived at the Castle Garden immigration depot in New York City on the ship EIDER. (Also on the ship was the Carl Reschke family; all were emigrating from Kriefkohl). The Behnkes were following Carl's younger brother, John Jacob Behnke, who had emigrated to Syracuse, New York as a 16-year-old in the company of three other Reschke families from Kriefkohl on the ship WERRA in 1888.

A farmer in West Prussia, Carl Behnke became a day laborer and then a factory worker in Syracuse, New York, where he made his home for the next 50 years. He worked for many years at the L.C. Smith & Corona Typewriter factory. He and "Minnie" had several more children in Syracuse: Lena, Margaret (also called Grace), twins Clara and Henry, and Mina.
