Edward F. Behnke came to the U.S. from Prussia at the age of 15 in 1874 on the S.S. NECKAR with his family. Once in Syracuse he first worked in the family trade as a tailor. Eventually he became a well-known saloonkeeper and restaurant owner, living and working at his establishment at 1125 Butternut Street on Syracuse's German North Side.

He married Augusta Braack circa 1881 and they had one daughter, Florence (born circa 1884).

Around 1903-1904 Edward raised pigeons for competitive speed flights. Around that time he also became a noted breeder of pedigree dogs, including toy cocker spaniels and Boston terriers. He was active at the beginning of the Onondaga Kennel Club and its first annual dog shows. He was also an active member of the Syracuse Liquor Dealers Association, the North Side Citizens Association, and the Anglers Association of Onondaga County, among other groups.

Funeral services for Edward F. Behnke, 61, who died Sunday, will be held at the home, 1834 Butternut st., Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Besides his widow, Mrs. Augusta Behnke, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Frank Feasenmeyer, and a sister, Mrs. August Klein. Mr. Behnke was a member of Court Central City, 322, Foresters of America; the Journeymen Tailors Union, and Freie Brueder Lodge, Deutscher Order of Harugari.
