Arlene M. (Behrens) Ammon

Funeral Services for Arlene M. (Behrens) Ammon, 84, of Bassett, Neb. were held July 7 at the United Methodist Church in Bassett with Reverend Gary Graesser, Bassett Assembly of God Church, and Reverend Nancy Keller, Bassett United Methodist Church, officiating.
Kathy Gurnsey provided music. She sang two of Arlene's favorite hymns, "It is no Secret," and "Farther Along." In addition, the congregation sang "In the Garden," a favorite of Arlene's, that, in her younger days, she often played for church services on her guitar. Dr. Royce J. Ammon gave a eulogy.
Casket bearers were Jerry Ammon, Keith Ammon, Loren Ammon, Neil Ammon, Scott Ammon, and Dwayne Gallaway. Burial was in the Bassett Memorial Park Cemetery. Hoch Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Arlene was born on Oct. 21, 1920, to William and Christina Behrens of rural Loup County Neb. She died on Sunday, July 3, 2005 at the West Holt Hospital in Atkinson, Neb.
Arlene is the mother of Dr. Royce J. Ammon of rural Banner County, Neb.
Arlene's early childhood was spent on a farm. She began her education at the Wiggle Creek country school; subsequently, she moved with her family to Litchfield, Neb., where she graduated from high school 1938 with an emphasis in "normal training" – or what would now be referred to as elementary education. In addition, she received some college education at Kearney State College in Kearney, Neb.
In 1938, Arlene moved to the Sand Hills to accept her first post as a teacher at the old Hammond school district, located some 30 miles southeast of Bassett. Arlene resided with her sister and husband, Rose and Earl Gallaway, during the three years that she taught at the Hammond school district.
On June 4, 1941, Arlene M. Behrens married John E. Ammon. They settled on the ranch with John's parents, Ben and Stella Ammon. Arlene ceased teaching for a profession at their time of her marriage. However, with the birth of John and Arlene's children – Gary in 1944, and Royce in 1954 – she began her most valuable teaching position; she was now teaching for life. Her legacy through these life lessons continues to inform and enrich the lives of her sons, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, and those whose lives have been touched.
Arlene is survived by her husband, John E. Ammon, of Bassett; her first son, Gary Ammon of Phoenix, Ariz., and her grandchildren (Gary's two children) Stacie (Ammon) Bomousch and her husband Ken of Indianapolils, Ind., and Scott Ammon and his wife Heather of Phoenix, Ariz., her great-grandsons (Gary's two grandsons) Daniel and Joshua Borrousch of Indianapolis, Ind.; Arlene's second son, Dr. Royce J. and Ruth E. (Rogers) Ammon of rural Banner Country Neb.; her sister, Elsie M. Nelson of Ord, Neb.; her brother, Lloyd (Bud) Behrens of Denver, Colo.; her brothers-in-law Frank Ammon and his wife Anie of Newport, Neb., and Dale Ammon of Colorado Springs, Colo.; her sisters-in-law Betty (Ammon) Anderson and her husband Norman of Concord, Neb., and Rosina (Ammon) Olson and her husband Dayton of Estes Park, Colo.; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and their families.
