The earliest record of Babette Behrman is the 1870 census for Monroe, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. Babette and her two daughters, Dora and Florence are living with the J. Hoffman family that includes his wife Regina (possibly Babette's sister) and their children Moses, Dora and Louis. There were no categories on that census year of relationships to head of household or even marital status. It is possible, Babette was already a widow, as indicated in the 1880 US Federal Census for Monroe. In that census she is living with her daughters Dora and Florence with a boarding couple, dry goods merchant Jonas Meyer and his wife Alice S. Meyer, their son Herman and servants Rosa Smith and Ben Raburn.

There are several mentions in The Ouachita Telegraph newspaper in the 1880's of a Mrs. Behrman moving in August of 1888 from the Copeley residence corner St. John and Grammont streets to the Calderwood residence on Second Street. An October 1886 articles indicates a Max Landauer with S. Meyer store moving in with Mrs. Meyer with a new wife.
