Dorothy grew up in the coal mining area of the Cumberland Mountains. Her father died when she was young, so she and her brother and sister were raised by their schoolteacher Mother. Dorothy attended Berea College and the University of Kentucky, and received her teaching degree. She started teaching in Kentucky, when she took a vacation with her grandfather and mother to California. There she was introduced to a young man in the Navy, named Kirk Bell. They began to write, and soon she moved to California and married. She continued teaching, taking a short break to have three babies. The first child, Katherine, lived only one day. Dorothy taught until she retired, then she still taught by substituting. She continued to teach until about 1996.
Dorothy loved to travel, and cruising was her favorite way to go. She didn't care where the ship was going, as long as she was on it. She also loved to camp, prefering a trailer to a tent in her later years. She gladly made the move to Las Vegas with Kirk to be closer to her grandchildren. She loved to read to them, and spent lots of time doing homework. Dorothy traveled right up to the end, taking her last cruise in January of 2001, and passed away peacefully on April 13, 2001, which was Good Friday.
