Ann E. Belmont, 87, passed away April 30, 2010, very peacefully, with family at her side, at Aegis of Kirkland, where she has recently been living and receiving wonderful care.
She was born Ann Elizabeth Thornton, daughter of Chauncey Thornton and Ara Collins Thornton, on February 26, 1923 in Inglewood, California.
Ann's father passed away when she was young; yet she and her younger sister, Pat, were raised by her mother, a teacher, and her extended family to enjoy a very loving and fulfilling life. She saw parts of California that now seem unimaginable, such as horseback riding with friends above the Pacific, at a place that is now Los Angeles International Airport.
Ann met the love of her life at Inglewood High School, and on November 15, 1942, Ann and Donald R. Belmont were married in Inglewood. This was during WWII, and, soon afterward, Don was off to serve his country in the Army Air Corps. Ann did her part, too, for the War Effort, working for Douglas Aircraft Co.
After the War, Ann's first daughter was born, and a few years later her second daughter was born. Don became a Special Agent with the FBI, and his assignments provided interesting stays for the family in Fort Worth, TX, Shreveport, LA, Washington, DC, and Oceanside, CA.
During the last assignment, nearby Carlsbad, CA became their long-term home where eventually they built their dream house with a view of the ocean. Carlsbad served as home base for many camping trips, motor home excursions, refreshing cruises at sea and, most importantly, the place for gatherings of family and friends.
Throughout her life Ann maintained a strong devotion to her family and many, many old friends. She was always there to listen and help out wherever she could. As 'Granny,' she was the perfect grandmother, bestowing the best care and attention there could be for her grandchildren.
If there was a marker for Ann, it was Humor. Laughter abounded wherever she was, and never at the expense of others. Also, music played a central role in her life, and that, fortunately, continued up to the end of her life. And with music, there naturally for Ann came dancing, from the Swing Era in bobby-socks all the way to doing the 'Hustle.' But dancing close to Don was best.
In 1989, Ann and Don moved from Carlsbad, CA to Mukilteo, WA, close to family, where they entertained family and friends and set out for many more adventures in their motor home.
In 2004, they moved to Bellingham, WA, and it was there that Don passed away in June 2006, after 63 years of wonderful marriage.
Ann will be greatly missed by all.
Ann will be buried next to Don at Greenacres Memorial Park, north of Bellingham. A graveside service will be at 2 P.M., Friday, May 7, 2010, and Pastor Douglas Iben will preside.
