Darrel "Squeak" Berkenpas, 83, of Le Mars passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014 at St. James Catholic Church with Father Jim Tigges and Paul Eisele officiating officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by the Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post of Brunsville. Visitation with the family present will be after 3:00 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2014 at the Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home with a 4:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary followed by a 7:00 p.m. Scriptural Wake Service. Memorials can be directed to the St. James Catholic Church Endowment.

Pallbearers will be Cole Berkenpas, Jill Ohm, Eric Berkenpas, Krista Nilles, Mike Berkenpas, and Craig Berkenpas. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jake Ahrendsen, Al Ahrendsen, Larry Freking, and Harlan Herbst.

Darrel Edward Berkenpas was born July 11, 1931 in Le Mars, Iowa. He attended country school near Seney. As a young man he drove truck for Maurice Harms. Darrell served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army from May of 1953 until his honorable discharge in May of 1955. After basic training he was stationed in Korea for the duration of his enlistment. Darrel was united in marriage to Lorraine Schlichte on December 1, 1956 in Granville. Darrel and Lorraine lived in Alton for a time before moving back to Le Mars. He worked for 35 years for Iowa Public Service as a utility lineman retiring in 1994. Along with working for I.P.S. Darrel also had worked part time for Babe Anthony Trucking and for Schenkelberg Implement. In retirement, Darrel also worked for the Plymouth County Secondary Roads and for Del Kellen Excavating. Darrel along with his sons operated a family business of cutting and splitting firewood for many years.

He was a longtime member St. James Catholic Church. He was also a retired member of the Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department, member of the Hereen-McHale-Wilken American Legion, Le Mars Eagles, and the Knights of Columbus. Darrel and Lorraine enjoyed trips to Branson, Missouri and playing pinochle.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lorraine of Le Mars; his children: a daughter Jody Ohm and her husband Steve of Le Mars and their children Jill Ohm and her finance John Fitch, Haley Sunderman and her husband Brandon and children Gavyn and Hayden, Abby Phillips and her husband Corey, a son Dave Berkenpas and his wife Kris of Le Mars and their children Lauren Berkenpas, Lindsay Berkenpas (Bobby Ladd), Eric Berkenpas (Kaitlin Fischer), and Adam Berkenpas. A daughter Linda Nilles and her husband John of Le Mars and their children Krista Nilles (Dan Bolton) and Rachel Nilles (fiancé Tim Bolton), a son Tom Berkenpas and his wife Michele of Le Mars and their children Cole, Brook, and Evan Berkenpas, a daughter-in-law, Patty Berkenpas of Le Mars and her children Craig Berkenpas (Trista Ludwig) and their children Kennedy, Kole, Karson, and Kaden and Mike (Becky) Berkenpas and their children Brayden and Gunnar; In-Laws: Cliff and Dolly Schlichte of Granville, Iowa, Odelo and Verna Schlichte of Everly, IA, Bernie and Elaine Schlichte of Westbrook, Minnesota, Charlotte and Danny Hoag of Kansas City, Ruth and Bob Hoffman of Archer, Iowa, and Mary Jo and Ron Olsen of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Doug Berkenpas on December 22, 2004; and 2 brothers-in-law, Pat Schlichte and Greg and Alice Schlichte.
