Pauline Baumgarth was the daughter of Hirsch Berman and Dinah Hirshfield.

Pauline and her husband Samuel Baumgarth had eight children, all born in Latvia (at the time, part of the Russian Empire). Samuel and their eldest son Jacob ("John") preceded Pauline to the United States. The family settled in Detroit by the late 1880s.

After her husband's death, Pauline moved to Cleveland to be with her eldest daughter Harriet Blumenthal.
