It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Jack Berman, a great lover of life and people, on December 4, 2009.
One of the few individuals who could genuinely be described as beloved without exaggeration, he is survived by his devoted wife of twenty-one years, Pearl, and his adoring children Wendy, Hilary, Steven, and Mari, grandchildren Brian, Morgan, Jillian, Raven, Nina, Izella, Briana, and Alan and great grandchildren Cole and Gabby. He also leaves step-grandchildren Natasha, Josiah, Allison, and Zoe.
The son of Anna and Harry Berman, Jack was born in Centralia, WA and grew up in Chicago, IL. He sold newspapers from the age of seven to help his family and graduated from high school at the age of fifteen, the youngest in his class. He attended Northwestern University as a journalism major, and began his career at Shure Brothers during the depression.
His writing, marketing, and interpersonal skills were so outstanding that he quickly moved up to become sales manager and was the original designer of the world famous Shure Unidyne microphone. He moved to California in 1953 with his wife Bobbie to begin The Jack Berman Company as a manufacturer's representative in the growing electronics industry.
His firm was recognized thirty-five times by fifteen different principals as "Rep of the Year." He was the only person ever awarded lifetime honorary membership in the National Electronic Distributors Association, and was the first rep in history to be elected President of the Electronics Distribution Show.
He was installed into the Audio Industries Hall of Fame in 1981, the first rep to achieve that high honor. Jack then retired to devote more time to writing and developing his "Agreeable Selling" seminars. He conducted hundreds of sales training workshops and seminars throughout the world for salespeople from manufacturers, distributors, representatives, retailers, and trade associations.
He remained an active teacher, writer and lecturer in the field until his death at the age of ninety-four, always exhibiting the same energy, enthusiasm, curiosity, and genuine desire to improve the state of the art which made him so popular. He was predeceased by his second wife Rita, sister Ruth, brother Gene, and daughter Hilary.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Hillside Mortuary.
