The August Bernau family came from Germany in 1858. The trip taking 13 weeks on the ocean. The family consisted of August born 1820, his wife Freidka (Zieman), born 1824, and their children, Anna, Herman, William, and Julias. Julias the youngest died in route to America and was buried at sea.

The family settled in Clayton County, Iowa where many other German families had settled. While the family was living near Guttenberg, a daughter Henrietta was born. The family after several years in Guttenberg came to Jefferson Township in Madison County, and homesteaded on land south of De Soto.

The children.
Anna married Rhienald Kneuper and had four children.
Herman married Sarah Friedrickson and had two children.
William married Wilhelmina Ball, they had seven children.
Henrietta the youngest child of August and Friedka married Charles Wishmier. They had eight children.

August Bernau the pioneer died in 1883 and was buried at Fairview Cemetery. His wife Friedka continued to live with her son William and family on the Bernau homestead.

Note that De Soto, Iowa is in southern Dallas County while the Bernau homestead was in Jefferson Township in northern Madison County.
