Funeral services for Bettye Bethune, 83, who passed away, Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Avante of Ormond Beach, Fl will be 11 AM, Thurs., Sept. 2nd, at New Life Church Ministries, 1625 Derbyshire Rd., Daytona Beach, with Dr. Ivory P. Webb-Young officiating. Interment will follow in Daytona Memorial Park. Calling hours will be Wednesday, Sept. 1st, 5-8 PM at RJ Gainous Funeral Home and from 9:30 - 11 AM at the church on Thurs.
Bettye was born to Willie and Georgetta Jones on Sept. 30, 1926 in Clearwater, FL and moved to this area at an early age. She lived in Florida her entire life and was a retired educator in Volusia County Public Schools for 35 years. She taught at Campbell Senior High School and in 1968 she became the 1st black female Physical Education teacher for Mainland Senior High School.
Bettye will be remembered as an amazing mother to her 8 children and a surrogate mother to many who knew her. She was profoundly known as Ms. Bethune or Coach B by many of her students, colleagues, and peers. From her involvement as an educator, coach, cheerleader, sponsor and mentor to many, she was always there for her family. She was a member of Bible Way Christian Ministries.
Survivors include, 6 sons: Willie Jones, Olympia, WA, Albert, III, Oakland, CA, Samuel, Daytona Beach, Michael, Charles, and Stearly, all of Atlanta, GA; 2 loving daughters, Patricia, Atlanta, GA, and Mary, Daytona Beach, 10 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild; a host of caring students and friends.
