claiborne fox bigbee was born in bigbee, (now guthrie) callaway county missouri, where his father, the distinguished benjamin strother bigbee, had settled from robertson co., tennessee to marry his cousin cynthia reno, daughter of judge henry reno. benjamin had founded the town in promoting a railroad which never came. he invested & lost heavily. after the nations centennial, the family set out for the wilamette valley, oregon. they all loved sports and claiborne was a crafty pitcher. he and his wife were educators at a local high school, where he was said to be the first in the valley to master & teach the curveball. he taught his three sons to play. he didn't have to push them very hard. the trio became talented mutli-sport, multi-lettered UO graduates just prior to WWI. after serving, one son became a postwar world series star, another made the short list of dual-sport MLB/NFL pros.
