On Thursday, November 18th, 2010, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, Midge Mahaffey, passed away peacefully at the Snug Harbor Care Center at Sealevel, North Carolina. She was in her 92nd year.
Known affectionately as "Midge" all her life, Mildred Biggs was born on July 12, 1918, at Paint Creek. The 8th of 11 children, she was the daughter of the late Lonzo C. and Minnie Godby Biggs. Her sisters and brothers, Mamie McCutcheon, Faye Daniel, Opal Stanley, Gladys Wilson, Thelma Beckelhimer, Wilma Sotak, Paul Biggs, Cecil Biggs, Freda Hugall and Carlos Biggs, have preceded her in death.
Midge's early years were spent at Paint Creek. With the death of her father when she was 16, her mother and siblings settled in Eccles where her mother ran the "Titanic," a boarding house. Midge would graduate from Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1935. In 1939, she would marry John Quincy Mahaffey. To this union were born two daughters, Betty Jo and Linda Jane. The Mahaffey family first lived in Eccles and then settled on Westwood Drive in Beckley. The family worshiped at the United Methodist Temple where Midge was active in various church auxiliaries, donating many hours of work. Midge and John eventually made their home on Lilly Street in Beckley where they were longtime residents. Married for 48 years, John Mahaffey died on October 8th, 1987. An energetic woman, Midge worked for the John W. Eye Company for 28 years, retiring at the age of 74. Her home was often the gathering place for the Biggs family throughout the years, during good times and sad times. She will be greatly missed by her extended family and friends. In 2007, when her health began to get frail, Midge moved to Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay located at Sealevel.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters and their families. Betty Jo Taylor and her husband Jack, of Rosewell, GA, and their son, Jeffery of Lawrenceville, GA; Linda J. Curtis and her husband Gene Madison, Peyton and Carson, all of Charlotte, NC. There are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends in and outside of West Virginia.
On Sunday November 21st, at 2 p.m., we will remember the life of Mildred Mahaffey with a Service of Remembrance at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Betty Lusk will be officiating. Midge will then be taken to the Blue Ridge Memorial Garden at Prosperity where she will be laid to rest.
