Bertie Stowe Biggs Spencer, 102, of the Blue Ridge Rehab Center, Martinsville, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

She was born in Patrick County on April 18, 1902, to William Thomas Stowe and Ada Mills Stowe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Jefferson Biggs; a daughter, Bertie Ruth Biggs; two infant children; her second husband, Grover Cleveland Spencer; a step-daughter, Betty Mae Case; nine sisters: Julia Plaster, Bertha Mabe, Effie Wyatt, Allie Freeman, Ruby Clark, Mae Hopkins, Mildred Guilliams, Agnes Clark and Vance Hutchens; and six brothers: Edd Stowe, Tom Stowe, Charlie Stowe, Harry Stowe, James Stowe and Lemly Stowe. She attended the Big A School in Patrick County. She retired after 22 years with Bassett Walker Knitting Co. and was a member of Shady Grove Primitive Baptist Church for 70 years. Surviving are a son, Robert A. Biggs of Martinsville; two daughters: Lois B. Turner of Ridgeway and Francis Ingram of Martinsville; five step-children: Albert Spencer, Benton Spencer, Robert Spencer, Louise Lackey and Belle Tawney; a brother, Davis Stowe of Collinsville; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
