Army Staff Sgt Bishop was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He died of wounds suffered when the MH-47 helicopter he was aboard crashed. According to reports, the long-range, heavy-lift helicopter crashed at about 3:30 AM as it pulled away following a successful operation against militants engaged in arms and drug trafficking in the village of Darreh-ye Bum, near the border with Turkmenistan. Dust kicked up during the helicopter's liftoff blinded the crew and the Chinook struck a tall structure. Keith was a 1999 graduate of Patchogue-Medford High School in Medford, New York. Joining the military was something he had always wanted to do but the September 11 attacks were the determining factor. He enlisted in the Army in April 2003 as an Infantryman but decided he wanted to join Special Forces. In 2007, Keith attended the Special Forces Selection and Assessment and earned the coveted "Green Beret" in October 2008 as a Special Forces weapons sergeant. He was working in Afghanistan as part of a team to stem the flow of heroin-producing opium that helps bankroll the anti-U.S. insurgency. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal for Valor, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Air Assault Badge, Parachutist Badge, and the Special Forces Tab. Keith was the type of man who was quiet and steady and always had your back no matter what. He leaves behind his wife, Maggie.
