BISSELL, retired farmer, De Witt; was born in Trumbull Co., Ohio, in July, 1812; at 20 years of age, he went to Pittsburgh, Penn., where for three years he was clerk in a wholesale dry goods store; thence to Alton, Ill., where he remained three years; then returned to his native town and engaged in the dry goods business in Ashtabula Co., Ohio, where, in 1838, he married Maria Burr, a native of Massachusetts;
He came to Clinton Co. in 1840; engaged in farming in
De Witt Township; has followed the occupation of farming most of the time since he came to Iowa but for a time was engaged in the dry goods business in De Witt; was School Fund Commissioner for eight years. Mr. Bissell has two sons and two daughters-Joseph B., Helen E., Evelyn and Charles P. Mrs. Bissell was born in South Hadley, Mass., in 1809.
