Lou was the daughter of Robert Black and Molly Garrett. She married Milton Brown Bates on August 27, 1883, in Hickman Co., TN, and was the stepmother of his children by his first marriage to Nancy Chessor: Ida I. Bates McClearen (1875 - 1953), Emma E. Bates Campbell (1877 - 1930), Julia Bates (1879 - 1903), Rosa Viola Bates Pace (1881 - 1959), and Samuel Torrence Bates (1883 - 1973).

Lou passed away from tuberculosis. According to her death certificate she was born in 1862; however, her headstone lists her birth year as 1865.
