Dr. Donald S. Blackwell, 71, of Indianapolis, formerly of Bloomington, died Sunday at his residence.

Born Oct. 24, 1927,
Son of Frank Sr. and Lillie (Robertson) Blackwell.

An orthopedic surgeon and co-founder of Orthopedics Indianapolis Inc. in 1962.
Graduated magna cum laude in 1949 from Indiana University. He graduated second in his class from the IU School of Medicine in 1952. He practiced surgery for 30 years at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

After retiring from Orthopedics Indianapolis in 1992, he volunteered at the VA Hospital, teaching the Orthopedic residents. He also did work for Social Security disability claims.

Member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Clinical Orthopedic Society, Indiana Orthopedic Society, the Indiana State Medical Society, the Marion County Medical Society, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honorary.

Attended Geist United Methodist Church and was in the Army in World War II.

Survivors include:
Wife, Betty (Nichols) Blackwell;
4 daughters, Nancy Gaillard, Christy Berry, Ruth Hanna and Donna Thaler;
3 sons, Michael Morris, Brett Blackwell and Scott Blackwell; 1 brother, Frank Blackwell Jr.

Services at Conkle Speedway Funeral Home in Indianapolis. Burial will be at Floral Park Cemetery.

Civilian Occupation was Tinsmiths, copper smiths, and sheet metal worker.
