She will be remembered for her faithful, loving, generous and strong spirit.
Born August 14, 1956, and raised in Chapel Hill, Margery was the daughter of the late Mildred Bennett and Thomas Jefferson Blackwood, the granddaughter of the late Eva Riggsbee and Winfield Scott Blackwood and the late Hattie Daniel and John Will "Pless" Bennett. She was the sister of the late Winfield Scott Blackwood of Chapel Hill.
Margery was a graduate of Chapel Hill High School and Durham Technical Community College. She retired from UNC Hospitals in 2006, where she had dedicated 31 years in several administrative support positions. In 2003, she was named Support Staff Employee of the Year in the Division of Urologic Surgery.
Margery was devoted to her family, her friends, and her church. She was a follower of God and a leader to all by example. She was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, where she was ordained as their first woman deacon and played an integral role in the youth and children's ministries. She loved caring for babies, stirring stew pots for Mount Carmel's barbecues and doing whatever was needed to help in any way she could. With a group of friends, she also prepared and served dinner twice a month for residents of the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill. Margery had a servant's heart and gave her all to everything she did.
Margery is survived by her husband, Walter Steven Barton, of the home; daughter, Lindsay Scott Barton, of the home; sister, Tommie Jean Blackwood, of Chapel Hill; brother, William (Billy) Bennett Blackwood and his wife, Faye of Chapel Hill; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
