Catherine Elizabeth Blumenschein, 88, of Helena, died in her sleep Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at Big Sky Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 8, 1916, to Thomas and Catherine Lyons in Waukegan, Ill., and grew up on the family dairy farm with her brother, Bill. After graduating from Antioch High School, she attended business college.
In 1939, she married Andrew Henry Van Haecke in Lake County, Ill. The couple farmed in Illinois and Wisconsin and had three children. Andrew died in March 1953.
She married Gordon Lynn Blumenschein Sr. on Oct. 29, 1966, in Millstadt, Ill. They resided in Lake Villa, Ill., before moving to Wisconsin Dells, Wisc., to operate Liz's Motel. The couple retired to Boulder in 1993 and moved to Helena in 2004.
Known affectionately as Bess or Liz, she loved travel, nature, the jitterbug, the Green Bay Packers and a good apple pie with green onions. Most of all, she loved her family.
She is survived by her husband, Gordon; son, Thomas, West Bend, Wisc.; daughter, Teresa O'Brien, Racine, Wisc.; son, Richard, Polson; stepdaughter, Joyce Wells, Virginia.; stepdaughter, Norma Lima, Nevado, Calif.; stepson, Gordon Blumenschein Jr., Woodridge, Ill.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She will be warmly remembered by friends and relatives, including nephews Richard and Dennis Brenton, who were like sons to her.
The family is planning a memorial for the fall and suggests memorials to Catholic Charities.
