NEW PALTZ: Charles A. Bogdanowicz of New Paltz, a retired chief of the Town of New Paltz Police Department and a 20-year resident of the area, died July 6 at home. He was 57. The son of Jane Kimbowski Bogdanowicz and the late Karol Bogdanowicz, he was born June 13, 1938, in Brooklyn. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, New Palz; an instructor of criminal justice at the BOCES Vo-Tech Center, Port Ewen; belonged to the New York State and Ulster County police chiefs associations; was a charter member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, New Paltz; served on the New Paltz Youth Commission; and was a member of the Ulster BOCES Teachers Organization and the United Teachers Association. "He was without question if not the best, one of the best. He just oozed with honesty and integrity," said Daniel Miller, the Town of Ulster's current police chief, who was an officer during Mr. Bogdanowicz's tenure in the top post during the early 1980's. He had begun as chief in the mid-1970s. Survivors include his mother, of Queens; his wife, Judith Fractenberg Bogdanowicz, at home; three sons, Michael Bogdanowicz of Peekskill, Steven Bogdanowicz of Poughkeepsie and Adam Fractenburg at home; three daughters, Karen Donatilli of Highland, Carol Verdis of Poughkeepsie and Cheryl Bogdanowicz of Poughkeepsie; two sisters, Barbara Fischer of Queens and Rita Rogers of Poughkeepsie; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the Chief Charles Bogdanowicz Scholarship Fund, c/o BOCES, Route 32 North, New Paltz, N.Y. 12561.
