Palo Alto--Funeral services for Cornelius Bol, inventor of the mercury vapor lamp, will be held at 11 a.m., tomorrow in the Alta Mesa Memorial Chapel in Palo Alto. Bol, 80, retired as a research associate at Stanford university in 1947 but continued active in his field until his death Friday. He started experimenting with the lamp in his native Holland, perfected it at Stanford and exhibited it for the first time in 1939 at the Golden Gate International Exposition. The lamp is described as one of the most powerful sources of light ever invented and is used widely at airports and by the military. [Daily Independent Journal (San Rafael, California), Mon., 2 Aug 1965, pg. 4]

. . . Cornelius [Bol] married twice; his first wife, who became such in Holland in 1917, Corrie Barensten, died a year later on the birth of their daughter, who in turn died at the age of 18. In 1924 he married Josina Johanna DenHaan; six sons were born to them, Kees, Klaas, Pieter, Joor, Morris (named for Prof. Morris Cross), and Gerald; to them and their mother we send our heartfelt sympathy. [Princeton Alumni Weekly, Vol. 66, 21 Sep 1965, pg. 21]
