Peter Böll was born in Süderhastedt, Dithmarschen, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. His mother died in Dithmarschen and his father then married Catarina Helümann on December 5, 1879. He emigrated to America departing Hamburg aboard HAPAG's SS Bohemia on May 25, 1882, with his father, stepmother, half-sister Anna, and two brothers, John and Henry. Peter became a U.S. Citizen at Council Bluffs, Iowa, on November 7, 1887. After a brief residence in Pottawatomie County, Iowa, he settled on a farm outside Kelso, Nebraska, where he remained until at least 1910 (1900, 1910 US Census). He returned briefly to Dithmarschen in 1910 (U.S. Passport Application). He was a long time resident at the State Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska (1920, 1930, 1940 US Census). According to his half-sister, Anna, "Peter was struck by lightning that caused his 'insanity,' so he was sent to the State Hospital. Years later he could have been discharged, but chose instead to stay and took charge of the hospital's woodworking shop." He was never married.
