David Lee Bonetto, a native of Fresno, passed away peacefully with his beloved wife of 52 years by his side.

David attended Winchell Elementary school and Roosevelt High School. He received his Bachelor's in Art and Special Education from California State University, Fresno, and his Master's in Education Administration from Fresno Pacific University.

He began his teaching career at Our Lady of Victory and then went on to teach at McKinley-Roosevelt and was an administrator in Central Unified School District: an educational career spanning 33 years.

Along with his wife, he was a co-owner of Sunnyside Department Store, which was founded by David's mother Mabel in 1950.

Upon retirement he helped found Educare and VDA, Inc. David belonged to and was active in many organizations, including St. John's Cathedral, Knights of Columbus, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, American Legion Post 509, Edison Social Club, Moose's Lodge, Cabrillo Club, Italian Catholic Federation, Sons of Italy, Italian American Club, Olympic Club, Fresno Smooth Dancers, and Danceworks Unlimited.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator and volunteer, David had many loves and passions. Among these were cooking, dancing, traveling with friends and family, gardening, art, and spending time with grandchildren. David was proud of his cultural heritage and held his family traditions close to his heart.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Mabel Bonetto; and sister Betty Howerton.

David is survived by his wife, Erna Bonetto; son, David W. Bonetto and his partner Eric Gomez; son, Maurice Bonetto and his wife Carey Karle; grandchildren, Payton Polanco and Ema, Evan, and Eliot Karle Bonetto; and numerous extended family members, Rene Polanco; honorary son, Herman Barretto and his wife Karen, and their children Kate, Sam, and Tess; Aunt Betty Porcile and her family; brother-in-law, Larry Howerton and his family; sister-in-law, Anna Waters and her family; and Joe and Sheryl Alandt and family.

Visitation will be held at St. John's Cathedral, on Thursday, September 29, 2011, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., followed by a Vigil Service, at 7:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John's Cathedral, on Friday, September 30, 2011, at 9:00 a.m., followed by the interment at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to St. John's Cathedral; or Donations for a scholarship in David's name may be made to Fresno Regional Foundation, 5250 N. Palm Ave., Suite 424, Fresno, Ca. 93704 (Please note David Bonetto on your check).
