Having been in declining health, Martha Berens died peacefully in her sleep early Saturday morning, Jun. 28, 1997, at Hilltop Nursing Home in Parker. She attained the age of 94 years, eight months and two days.

Martha (Bosch) Berens was born on a farm near Parker, SD on Oct. 26, 1902, one of twelve children of Thomas and Betty (Neeman) Bosch. She attended rural school and grew up there.

Martha was married to Dick Berens, Jr. on Feb. 10, 1926 at Chancellor.

They were blessed with six children, Harvey, twins, Elwayne and Duane, Mavis, Ocesola and Viola. She and Dick farmed one and one-half miles northwest of Chancellor most of their married life. On the farm Martha always had a big garden and a large potato patch. She raised chickens and also milked cows. She liked to bake and her homemade bread, cake, pies and cookies were delicious. She seldom used a recipe. Martha's husband preceded her in death on Jul. 24, 1962. Later in 1962 she moved into Chancellor where she continued to live until she entered Hilltop Nursery Home in Parker on Jan. 30, 1990.

After she moved into town she enjoyed making quilts, tatting doilies and she also babysat. Many people have Martha's tatted bookmark crosses and all of her family have a hankie she tatted around. The town children often stopped in to play games, visit and have a fresh "home baked" cookie with Grandma Berens.

Besides her parents and her husband, Dick, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Doreen Christensen in 1970; one son-in-law, Leo Lafontaine, in 1995 and her eleven brothers and sisters.

Grateful for having shared her life are her six children: three sons, Harvey Berens and his wife, Deloris, of Chancellor, Elwayne Berens and his wife, Marjorie, of Hartford and Duane Berens and his wife, Jean, of Denver, CO; three daughters: Mavis Christensen and her husband, Darrell, of Parker, Ocesola Lafontaine of Chicago, IL, and Viola Berg and her husband, Loren, of Kent, WA; 23 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren.
