NORFOLK - James "Jimmy" Boyd Bowden, 88, passed away July 6, 2007, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.
A native of Norfolk, he was the son of the late John C. and Madora E. Bowden. James served in the U.S. Navy and retired as a master chief after 30 years of honorable service to his country. He then worked for the City of Norfolk in the city garage supply department and retired from there after many years. James loved his family and enjoyed cooking, baking and watching baseball and football. He was predeceased by his wife, Lenora "Mary" Bowden, two sisters and three brothers.
He is survived by one brother, Ralph B. Bowden and wife Margaret of Norfolk; a niece, Debra Price Mizzell and husband Kenneth; and a great-niece, Krystal D. Mizzell, all of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by a nephew, John W. Whitehurst Sr. and wife Gladys of Virginia Beach; a niece, Norma "Tina" Talbot of Kansas; and a host of other great-nieces and great- nephews.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Fred Archer. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
