Charlotte Griswold Bowden, born in Louisville, Kentucky, on Feb 27, 1927, died in her daughter's home in Laurel MD, on Monday, Aug 12, 2013, after a prolonged illness due to ALS. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends around the world.
Charlotte devoted most of her life to giving and caring for others in countless ways, including substitute teaching in the NYC public schools, leading a Brownie Girl Scout Troop, working in homeless shelters and soup kitchens, volunteering for years in a nursing home, and contributing in many ways to her church. It was impossible to meet Charlotte and not be touched by her kindness and generous spirit.
Charlotte was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Lemuel Bowden, and her second son, Alexander Broughton Bowden. She is survived by five offspring: Howard Griswold Bowden (m. Connie), Margaret McNeer Bowden (m. Steve Nickodemus), Mary Lawrence Bowden (m. Dave Akin), Rebekah Bowden Brown (m. David Brown), and Stella Bowden Salyer. Charlotte is survived as well by 10 grandchildren (Dave, Tim, and Ben Nickodemus; Katie and Ellie Akin; Jed, Gus, and Griffin Brown; Charlotte Griswold and Kathryn Etheridge Salyer), and 2 great-grandchildren (Jacob and Noah Nickodemus).
A memorial service for Charlotte will be held at Eastern Shore Chapel, 2020 Laskin Road, Va Beach, at 11 a.m. on Sat, Oct 19. At a later date her ashes will be committed to rest with her late husband at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in her name to either the Lemuel Bowden Food Closet at Eastern Shore Chapel or the ALS Association.
