Adelaide Rawls Bowden, Child of the Covenant, joined her Lord and Savior on April 2, 2014. Beloved wife, mother, family member, and friend, she was completely devoted to all she loved.
For Addie, there was only one companion in life and that was Billy. He was the love of her life! Their life together began on February 3, 1951 and was a commitment that lasted for 54 years. They devoted their married life to raising and supporting their children; that was a top priority. Their love held fast - through the good and tough times; their devotion to each other never wavered.
Addie was a mother like no other. She raised her girls with high standards and expectations that would serve them a lifetime. Addie firmly believed her daughters needed to be kind and polite to everyone. She taught her girls to respect all people they met and to care for the least of these.
Addie's infectious spirit was her trademark; she was enjoyed by all who knew her because she enjoyed them. Her great joy was an intense game of Bingo, The Elks Lodge Women's Auxiliary, a great meal at Red Lobster, and a rare filet mignon steak. In her last days, Addie wanted nothing more than to enjoy an outing with her grandchildren, the destination didn't matter. Riding in the car, getting mac & cheese with her granddaughter or just taking in the scenery, everything was fun to Addie. She truly adored her family. Her grandchildren were perfect in every way; they could do no wrong. They felt the same about her. Addie's sense of humor was unique and everyone enjoyed this gift. Addie loved everyone she met and everyone loved Addie! Quite simply, she was sweet!
Addie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Raleigh Richard Bowden (Billy) and her parents - David A. and Adelaide B. Rawls.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughters and spouses - Mary Bowden Ray (Duncan) of Raleigh NC, Adelaide Bowden Sprouse (Doug Thorpe) of Mineral VA. Her grandchildren - Margie and Catherine Ray of Raleigh NC, and Colin Sprouse of Mineral VA. Addie also enjoyed her many friends from Richmond VA, First Presbyterian Church - Raleigh, and Glenaire Retirement Community.
A celebration of Addie's life will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 in the Auditorium of Glenaire Retirement Community, Cary, NC. The Revs. Meredith Bratcher and Bob Inskeep will officiate. A private burial was held in Richmond VA.
