Suffolk, VA. Dec. 24 -- Annie Lee Bowden, 12-year-old daughter and only child of Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Bowden, prominent citizens of Zuni, Va., while playing the part Wednesday night of "Mrs. Santa Claus" in a public school entertainment, caught fire from a lighted Christmas tree and was burned to death.
Between 600 and 700 persons were in the schoolhouse at the time, and a near panic ensued, with no fatalities, however, except the tragic death of the little "leading lady."
The funeral services were held today at Mount Carmel Church in the presence of scores of children and adults who knew and loved the child.
