"Sad indeed was the news which followed close upon the terrific electric storm of Saturday afternoon, when intelligence was received that Henry C. Bowers of this village and William Kernan, Jr., of Utica, had been struck and killed by lightning while playing golf at the head of the lake ... Mr. Bowers was a son of the late Henry J. Bowers, and was born in this village Sept. 25, 1857. His early education was obtained at private schools here. At the age of twenty-one he entered the law office of Platt, Girard & Bowers, the latter being his brother, John M. After his admission to the bar Mr. Bowers practiced his profession for six or seven years, and at one time had his office in the Hooker building in this village. He was a member of the Stock Exchange of New York at the time of his death. Fourteen years ago he married Miss Estelle Durant, daughter of Charles Durant, a wealthy sugar refiner of New York. Four children were born to them, only two of whom are now living, a son, aged five and a daughter of three. Mr. Bowers was one of the charter members of the Otsego Golf club. He was also a member of the St. Andrews Golf club and of the Union club of New York. He leaves two brothers, John M. and William C., and two sisters, one the wife of Maj. Charles L. Davis, U. S. A., and the other Miss Martha S. Bowers ... The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from "Willowbrook," his late home, the Rev. Dr. Shreve officiating. The entire funeral service, including the committal, was read at the house owing to the illness of Mrs. Bowers. A large number of the relatives and friends of the deceased were present. The interment took place in Lakewood cemetery ..." [The Otsego Farmer (Cooperstown, NY), Sept. 18, 1896, p. 5]
