Ithaca: Nancy Bowers Black, of Ithaca, NY, died peacefully Sunday, December 22nd, 2013, surrounded by her family following a short illness. Born December 1, 1928 in Atlanta, GA, Mrs. Black grew up in Kenmore, NY, attending Kenmore High School and the Albright Art School in Buffalo, earning a degree in commercial art in 1948. Her graphic art skills were employed at Buffalo, NY firms, during which time she met her husband, Robert Black. The couple married in 1953 and Mrs. Black retired in 1954 as they wished to start a family. Residing with her husband in East Aurora, NY, Mrs. Black was known for her involvement in the community. She was active in the League of Women Voters and the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), hosted several foreign exchange students, and was involved in vocal music and theater performances. For many years Mrs. Black was a local correspondent for the Buffalo News, reporting on meetings of the East Aurora Town, Village and School Boards. Mrs. Black practiced unselfish love, especially as wife and mother. A lifelong sports enthusiast, she promoted that interest in her children and participated with her husband in cross-country skiing, sailing and canoe-camping trips. In 2005 Mr. and Mrs. Black moved to Kendal at Ithaca, a senior life-care community in Ithaca, NY, where she served on the Art Display Committee and is remembered as a lovely lady of friendly nature and ready wit. Mrs. Black is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Susan Paris of Jacksonville, FL, Martin (Marylou Gramm) Black of Oakmont, PA, and Jennifer (Lora Goldston) Black of Ashland, MA; grandchildren, Tobias and Nathaniel Black; and brother, Harry (Barbara) Bowers of San Angelo, TX. Her parents, Paul Edward Bowers and Cortula Loos Bowers, preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held at Kendal at Ithaca at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2014, to be followed by a service in East Aurora in the spring, prior to interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Stroke Association or to the Kendal at Ithaca Residents' Association (memo: Employee Appreciation Fund), 2230 N. Triphammer Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.

Nancy Bowers Black Memorial Service

A memorial service for Nancy Bowers Black will be held on Saturday, April 26 at 3 p.m. at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, 345 Main Street. Mrs. Black died on Dec. 22, 2013, surrounded by her family, following a short illness. She was 85.

Mrs. Black and her husband Robert were residents of East Aurora from the time of their marriage in 1953 until 2005 when they moved to Kendal at Ithaca, a senior life-care community in Ithaca. During her 52 years in East Aurora, Mrs. Black was known for her involvement with the community and for her warm, friendly personality.

A private interment service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery. A previous memorial service was held at Kendal at Ithaca in January.

In place of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Stroke Association or to the Kendal at Ithaca Residents’ Association (Employee Appreciation Fund), 2230 North Triphammer Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
