She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Ebenezer M. B. Church in Leake County.
She attended Leake County Elementary School and later the Tipton Street School. She attended both Mary Holmes College and Tougaloo College. She also attended Holmes Community College before her illness.
She was the facility manager at Kosciusko and Durant Head Start for over thirty years.
Ethel was united in holy matrimony to Mr. James (Bud) Griffin. To this union three children were born. She was later united in matrimony to Mr. Will Bailey.
She was preceded in death by two children, both parents; a brother, Mr. I. V. Bowie; and a sister, Ms. Bertha Mae Griffin.
She departed this life April 3, 2003, at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving son, Edward Doyle (Mary) Griffin; a grandson, Thomas (Kristen) Griffin; a granddaughter, Kiara Gabriel Griffin; two brothers, Joe (Bessie) Bowie of Milwaukee, WI, Oma Gee (Doris) Bowie of Helena, AK; one sister, Ms. Irene (Herman) Tate; one living aunt, Mrs. Ida Mae (Tennie) Nash; one living uncle, Mr. Ester Nash of Philadelphia, MS; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
