LEWIS GRAY BOWKER died about 5 months after his daughter, Louie Alice Ensign, was born::: some notes suggest he died Jan 15, others June 1863, however, military records state he died Jan 17, 1863 and Emily applied for his Civil War pension before June, in April 1863 ::::::::: On Aug 13, 1862, the day Louie Alice was born, Lewis enlisted in the "War of 1861" in the Union forces, Ohio Volunteers. He mustered into service on Sept 5, 1862 at Camp Toledo. He was a 3rd Sgt. of "F" Company IIIrd Regt. OVI. ::: While in service he died of Typhoid Fever at the army hospital in Bowling Green, KY. He didn't make it home from the war, his monument in Farmer Cemetery is a cenotaph...in the oldest section of Farmer Cemetery, Farmer, OH Original Plot, Lot 67. LEWIS GRAY BOWKER7 was of the 7th generation of Bowkers in America (John6, Thomas5, John4, John3, JamesJr.2, James1) Lewis' parents, John & Lemira, were married Nov 7, 1839. In 1851 they moved from the village of Colburn/Madrid, St. Lawrence Co., NY to Farmer, OH. Lewis had one brother, George H. who died at not quite 5yrs of age.
On August 28, 1890, 37 Civil War veterans signed the charter for a Grand Army of the Republic post in Farmer, OH. The name that was chosen was Lew Bowker, GAR Post 725 after Lewis Gray Bowker, per 10-7-2016 edition of "The Crescent-News".
