MONTGOMERY -- Allen F. Bowman, a.k.a. Dr. Electric, age 57, died suddenly while riding his bicycle Sunday, June 29, 2003. He was born May 19, 1946, in Detroit, Mich.

He graduated from Royal Oak Kimball High School in Warren, Mich. Al then entered the U.S. Army, proudly serving in Vietnam from April 4, 1968, to April 4, 1969. Following his honorable discharge with the rank of SP5, he attended Oakland University and received a B.A. in Philosophy.

Al moved to Vermont in 1977, a move he often spoke of as one of the best decisions of his life. He loved to hunt and fish, but later became a fisherman who loved to let fish go, and a hunter who loved to watch wildlife. He held a reverence for all living things. Because he had been to war, Al wanted all of us to work for peace.

Al became a master electrician in 1991, an occupation he loved deeply. He enjoyed the camaraderie of working with other contractors and getting to know homeowners, many of whom became good friends. When not working, you could find him bicycling, snowshoeing, working in his garden, and reading. He was an avid reader who devoured books and loved sharing thoughts and ideas with others. He was an electrician, adventurer, philosopher, and friend to all.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Montgomery, a library trustee for the Montgomery Town Library, and a founding member of the Montgomery Cattlemen's Association.

Al was a wonderful husband to Sandy (Commons) Bowman, who was the love of his life, they were married Nov. 30, 1990. He was also a beloved stepfather to Jill Schoff and her husband, Eric, of Wallingford, Conn., and Joshua Potvin of Montgomery. He is also survived by his mother, Jane Bowman; a niece, Shannon Gruzwalski, both of Warren, Mich.; and many extended family members and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Nelson Bowman, a sister, Renee; and a favorite uncle, Marvin Asher.

In keeping with his wishes, Al was cremated, and a memorial service will be held Thursday, July 3, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Pratt Hall in Montgomery with Pastor Kate Tobey officiating.
