CENTRALIA COURIER, Centralia, Missouri, Thursday, Januery 31, 1929 Adam C Bowne Dead
Adam C. Bowne, about 81 years old, died at his home in the Lawson school district, north of town, Thursday about 5:10 p.m., after an illness of some time.
Funeral services were held at Appleman's Chapel, Saturday afternoon by Elder Egan Herndon after which the body was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery under auspices of hte (sic) Masonic fraternity.
Deceased who was a son of Andrew and Rachel Bowne, was born at Logan, Ohio, July 26, 1848. He was married to Miss Eliza Jane Teeters in 1869. In 1870 he came to this state and located on a farm a few miles south of Sturgeon and in 1876 he moved to Audrain county and in 1878 he bought and moved to the farm on which he lived until his death. It might be truthfully said that he carved from the raw prairie one of the finest farms in that section by his untiring energy and great patience. He was one of the progressive farmer-stockmen of his community and his rare good judgment led him to a successful career as a tiller of the soil.
Mr. Bowne was the oldest resident in the Lawson district having resided here for the past fifty-two years and, in his passing that district lost the last of the early settlers.
In 1885 he joined he A. F. A. M. lodge at this place and at the time of his death was one, if not the oldest member of the organization here. He was devoted to his lodge work and rarely missed a meeting until forced to do so by failing health.
Mr. Bowne was the embodiment of honesty and integrity, his word was gilt edged and his counsel often sought by his friends and acquaintances. He was a loving husband, a kind and indulgent father, a true friend and helpful neighbor. He will be greatly missed in the home and among his many friends.
He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. J. R. Stites of this city and Misses Ida and Imo Bowne of the home. One daughter, Edia passed to her reward in 1919, two sons, S. J. Bowne, Jr. also at home and W. A. Bowne of north of town. He also leaves one brother, S. J. Bowne, Sr., of near Sturgeon, one sister, Mrs. Lucinda Justis of Circleville, Ohio, five grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and one little great grand daughter, Ellen Marie Powell, who is cared for by the uncle and aunt, was a source of delight to the greatgrandfather in his declining years. He also leaves other relatives and many friends who will miss the aged father and loyal friend.
