A native of Bluffton, Carl "Blackie" Braden Jr., 79, of Martinsville, died Friday at Vencor South in Greenwood.

He was a teacher and basketball coach at Pinnell High School in Lebanon, Center Grove High School in Greenwood, Warren Central High School and Southport High School. He also was the assistant principal at Southport High School until 1983.

Mr. Braden was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame as a director and was serving as director emeritus.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara J.; two sons, Barton Kemp of Indianapolis and Bradford Carl of Baltimore; a brother, Harold of Fort Wayne; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn-Wilson Street Pierre Funeral Home in Greenwood, where calling will be for two hours prior to services.

Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.

Carl "Blackie" Braden Jr. was Southport basketball coach.
Services for Carl "Blackie" Braden Jr.,79, Martinsville, formerly of Indianapolis, a coach and administrator for more than a quarter of a century at Southport High School and a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 17 in Forest Lawn Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home, State Road 135 Chapel Greenwood, with calling from 11 a.m. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Greenwood. He died Oct. 13.
"Everyone across Hoosierland who follows basketball knows Blackie Braden" said David Nicholson, president of the state basketball hall of fame.
"Without question, I don't know anyone who knew Blackie that didn't have the utmost respect for him as a coach and person", said Nicholson, of Noblesville.
"Mr. Braden was head basketball coach at Southport High School from 1954 to 1969, posting a 256-134 record. He was named assistant principal in 1969 and served until he retired in 1983.
During the 1961-62 season, with probably his most famous protege, Louie Dampier, the Cardinals compiled a 26-2 record, losing by one point to Anderson in the regional finals.Dampier went on to star at the University of Kentucky and for the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association.
Mr. Braden played for Fort Wayne South High School in the 1940 state high school basketball finals and was named a member of the Indianapolis Star's all-state team that year.
He learned the coaching trade from legendary coach Tony Hinkle while he was a member of Hinkle's Butler University Basketball team.Mr. Braden attended Butler from 1940 to 1943.He was an Army veteran of World War II and received a Bronze Star and Presidential Citation for his service during the Battle of the Bulge.
After his military discharge, he returned to Butler, graduating in 1948. He received a Master's degree in education from Indiana University in 1963.
Mr. Braden began his high school teaching and basketball coaching career at Pinnell High School, Lebanon, in 1947. He also taught and coached at Center Grove and Warren Central before his career at Southport.
Seven of his Southport teams won the county basketball title. His teams captured seven sectional crowns and two South Central Conference championships.
Mr. Braden was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. He later served on the hall's board of directors and a director emeritus until his death.
He also was inducted into the Southport High School Hall of Fame.
His memberships included Phi Delta Theta fraternity, Hillview Country Club at Franklin, the National Association Secondary Schools Administrationand Indiana High School Athletic Association.
He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Robert Orr and was presented a Key to the City of Indianapolis by then-Mayor William H. Hudnut III.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, New Castle.
