Estelle Braxton Mitchell, 90, a native of Norfolk and formerly of Ruffin Street, departed this earthly life peacefully in Fort Washington, Md., on July 15, 2000.

She was the daughter of the late Van Buren Braxton and Menervia W. Braxton. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Deacon Horace W. Mitchell Sr. and a son, Horace W. Mitchell Jr.

She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington, Norfolk, and attended St. Paul's College in Lynchburg, Va. An active and faithful member of First Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, she joined at a very early age and was a member of numerous phases of the church.

Her dedicated church affiliations include: past chairwoman of the Deaconess Board; past assistant secretary of the Maggie Davis Bible Class; a member of the Mary Long Missionary Circle; leader of Group No. 2; and a devoted member of the Woman's Club and the church's Clothes and Food Bank.

Estelle was also a member and past matron of Adah Chapter Number 20, Order of the Eastern Star.

She will be loved forever and sadly missed by her four devoted children, George B. Mitchell of Washington, D.C., Estelle Mitchell Bowers of Temple Hills, Md., Barbara Mitchell Blount and her husband, James Blount, of Fort Washington, Md., and Van Buren Mitchell Sr. and wife, Diane Mitchell, of Norfolk; nine grandchildren, Karen E., and Anita of Norfolk, Carolyn Mitchell of Chesapeake, Estelle Bowers of Temple Hills, Md., Fonda Blount of Fort Washington, Van Buren Mitchell Jr. and Brandon Mitchell of Norfolk, Terry Blount of Fort Washington and Linwood Bowers Jr. of Miami, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Keon and Morgan of Norfolk; and a host of cousins and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday by the Rev. Johnnie L. White at First Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Riddick Funeral Services. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Family and friends may visit for remembrance at the home of her son at 5418 Bayberry Drive, Poplar Halls, and for the procession to the church.
