Mrs. Ada Brewer, 90 years old, and one of Silver City’s beloved pioneers, passed away last Wednesday at Hillcrest Hospital where she had been a patient for a week undergoing treatment for a fractured hip suffered in a fall. Born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, in 1873, Mrs. Brewer had come to the United States at the age of 14 years to make her home at Germantown, Pa. After completing School she met her late husband, Webster Evans Brewer, Sr., and they were married. Mrs. Brewer came to Silver City 58 years ago, for her husband’s health, which the latter recovered and for some years was associated with the early day firm of Lowe & Liann, as an accountant and office manager. Mr. Brewer died in 1920.
Now a widow with four children, Mrs. Brewer became one of Silver City’s best known and most successful business women for many years. Mrs. Brewer acquired the Phillip F. Bartlett insurance agency in 1925 when Mr. Bartlett moved to San Diego, Ca. She operated this agency until 1948 when she sold this business to A. L. Marshall and it later became the Marshall & Barron Insurance Agency, now operating in Silver City.
During her many years in business, Mrs. Brewer also served a term as President of the New Mexico Association of Insurance Agents, (an important recognition of her ability and prominence in insurance affairs of the state in those days). Her activities in the community included serving as Organist for the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd for many years, and as an officer in the Martha Guild. Her affiliations included membership in the Business & Professional Woman’s Club, Silver City Woman’s Club, Chamber of Commerce and Wacky Club, in all of which she took an active part over a long period of years.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Agnes (Brewer) Warrick of Long Beach, Ca., Mrs. Nancy (Brewer) Herndon of Laguna, Fl., and Mrs. Beatrice (Brewer) Mason of Los Angeles, Ca.; her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Webster E. Brewer, Jr., of Silver City; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday at the Church of the Good Shepherd of which she was a lifelong communicant and devout member. The last rites were conducted by the Rev. Clifton M. Henderson. Burial took place in the family plot in Memory Lane Cemetery in Silver City.
