Odessa Belle was the 4th of 6 children born to John and Malinda Brewer and the only one born in Arkansas. The family moved back to Texas when Odessa was a toddler. She grew up in Vivian, Foard Co. Texas. When she was 16 years old her Mother sent her to the Dick Hill's mercantile store in Vivian to buy sugar. It was there that she met a boy, sitting on a 100 pound sack of potatoes that she would spend the rest of her life with. Two years later Odessa married Richard Numbers Beatty on Nov. 21, 1925. This union brought 7children to a marriage that lasted 63 years. One of Dessie's most cherished possessions was her wedding band that R.N. had had inscribed with: RNB to ODB Nov. 22, 1925. The date is wrong. Due to the approach of a big storm the family that had gathered for the upcoming occasion decided they needed to return home as soon as possible. The wedding was held on the evening of Nov. 21, 1925.
Dessie was a very talented artist, a gift she passed on to her children. Her sense of humor was outstanding and she always kept her family and friends laughing. In 1970 Dessie's eyesight began to fail and by 1975 she was blind.
R.N., as everyone called him, passed away in 1988. In 1989 Dessie asked her daughter to write down a poem that she had composed in her mind. This poem was read at her funeral in 1990. Poem as follows:
MY HUSBAND
You said you'd always love me darling,
as you did that moonlight night,
As we sat in the old Ford on the hill.
There we said we would love
each other evermore.
We both grew old together
Yet,the stars are shining still.
But now you've gone and left me.
My days are long and lonely.
My nights are lonely too.
You are gone but not forgotten.
I'll always think of you.
Sixty-three long years we were married.
We shared our sorrows and our joys.
Raised a family of five children,
two girls and three boys.
One by one they grew up and left us
and now we are all alone.
Each day I love you more,
than I did when we first began.
But now you're gone forever-
my hurt it goes so deep.
I'll never see you on earth again,
but for you I cannot weep.
For someday I'll lie beside you-
in a deep and peaceful sleep.
